This morning’s revelations in The Mercury regarding the snap audit of food businesses and worker wage theft across Hobart are a damning indictment on the Liberals, says Federal Member for Lyons Mr Brian Mitchell MP.
The page 3 story in April 1’s edition of The Mercury entitled “Workers missing $600k” revealed 78 per cent of audited businesses were found to be underpaying their workers and 24 had failed to comply with basic record-keeping.
“Wage theft has become business as usual under the Liberals,” Mr Mitchell said.
“Whether it’s greed, ignorance or sloppy book-keeping, workers should not be paying the price of employers’ failure to understand the need to pay lawful wages and conditions.
“it’s a damning indictment on the Liberals that half a million dollars had to be recovered from businesses failing to pay their workers for their labour.”
Mr Mitchell said an Albanese Labor government would make tackling wage theft a top priority, alongside the creation of secure, long-term jobs in 21st century manufacturing.
