Liberal MPs must immediately come clean on whether Scott Morrison plans to close Centrelink offices in Tasmania, after concerning reports of shopfronts being at risk of closure across the country.
It would be an outrageous attack on some of the most vulnerable in our community if the Liberals planned to close Centrelink offices in Tassie.
Many vulnerable Tasmanians, including older Tasmanians, rely on face-to-face services at Centrelink offices across the state.
The Federal Liberals have form when it comes to reducing Centrelink services in Tassie with services in Kingston and Huonville repeatedly under threat.
Further, the shared Centrelink/Service Tasmania office in Sorell has not yet reopened since closing last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
We hope this will not be another permanent service closure under the Liberals, who continue to say they will deliver more services for regional communities but are scaling them back.
Federal Lyons MP Brian Mitchell said: “The impact of COVID-19 has shown just how important Centrelink services are to all Tasmanians and so it would be completely unfair if shopfronts are closed.”
“This would just add to the trend of other services in regional Tasmania, including bank branches, going backwards under the Liberals.”
