Local MP condemns racist graffiti

Brian Mitchell the Federal MP for Lyons, which includes the Central Highlands, has condemned racist graffiti that has appeared in the municipality.

A road sign in the Central Highlands was recently vandalised in opposition to Tasmania’s dual naming convention.

The Indigenous name “yingina” for yingina/Great Lake was spray painted over and an offensive and racist slur painted onto the sign.

“There is no place for this racism in our community,” Mr Mitchell said.

“Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves.

“Indigenous people have a long and ongoing connection with country. Respecting Tasmania’s dual naming convention is the very least we can all do to honour and pay respect to this proud and enduring heritage.”
