People across the Lyons electorate are getting an opportunity to write a postcard to Prime Minister Scott Morrison to progress a posthumous Victoria Cross nomination for Tasmanian war hero Teddy Sheean.
Federal Labor MP Brian Mitchell is delivering postcards to his constituents and inviting them to sign them and send them back in.
“Let’s be clear, the question of Teddy Sheean deserving a VC has been settled by the unanimous recommendation of the Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal,” Mr Mitchell said.
“So this postcard campaign isn’t about turning the VC into a popularity contest – that should never happen - it’s simply about respectfully asking the PM to stop blocking a meritorious nomination, and to allow it to progress to Her Majesty.
“People from all walks of life and all political persuasions want the Government to progress this deserved nomination.
“Like me, Tasmanians were shocked to learn that the Prime Minister personally intervened to stop Teddy Sheean’s nomination from being put to Her Majesty.
“The PM has made the wrong decision in choosing not to progress this nomination. Perhaps if the PM hears directly from the people of Tasmania he may reconsider.
“I remain hopeful that with continued goodwill across the political aisle, that the national parliament can come together with one voice in order to get this done.
“Teddy Sheean gave his last dying breath for his comrades and his country. This is the very least we can do in return.”
