Brian Mitchell, Federal Labor Member for Lyons, expresses his sadness at the loss of the historic hop kiln in Lachlan on Sunday afternoon.
The local landmark, known as Hopgrove, was more than 100 years old and standing at three storeys tall was an imposing reminder of the Derwent Valley’s history.
‘This is a sad day for Tasmania, the Derwent Valley and the Lomax family. This was a piece of Tasmanian history and now it is gone,’ says Mr Mitchell.
‘I thank the local fire services for their work in controlling the blaze, particularly their success in saving the houses and other historical buildings in the area.’
