THE criticism by reader Maurice Ducker of Labor’s vow to bestow upon Teddy Sheean a VC is misplaced (Letters, May 26). Labor’s vow is 100 per cent in line with the findings of the independent Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal. Labor’s commitment respects the wishes of Teddy’s family. The family called for Labor to provide the commitment after the disappointing revelation that Prime Minister Morrison personally intervened to reject the recommendation from being enacted. Labor’s preference is for Mr Morrison to change his mind and progress the DHAAT’s recommendation, so Teddy can finally be awarded the VC his selfless bravery entitles him to. However, if Mr Morrison continues to defy the tribunal’s recommendation, Tasmanians can rest assured a Labor government will respect it.
